10 Things The Addams Family Taught Me

What the Addams Family Taught Me About Life And Love

They’re creepy and they’re kooky, mysterious and spooky.” The Addams Family is best known for their ghoulishly gothic lifestyle, but beyond their dark surface is a lot we can learn about life and love. Here’s 10 things I’ve learned from the adorably strange Addams Family.

I’ve loved the show since I was a child, and it even sparked a short gothic phase in my early teens. The upside world of the Addams Family is kooky and morbid with a twist of dark gothic humor that made the clan a pop culture icon for decades.

They’re totally creepy and weird- obsessed with the dead and the super natural, they lived in an alternate universe. They get pleasure from pain, order from chaos and Morticia was known for cutting the heads off of her roses, keeping the stems instead. They saw beauty in what most of us don’t.

What I Learned From The Addams Family

1.) The Women Were Badass! Besides showing us that black is always in style, the Addams Family women were strong characters who took no crap. On the surface, Morticia was a sexy empress of evil. But underneath her wicked persona, was a fiercely protective mother and wife who supports her family and all of their kooky antics. She took no crap from anyone and would go to great lengths to ensure her family’s happiness.

I’m pretty sure Wednesday Addams is the reason the gothic scene was so strong in high school. Wednesday was a dark gothic genuis with more gloom than glam. She flaunted her own sense of style, and refused to be something she’s not for the sake of fitting in. Instead, she embraced all things morbid and snubbed all that is chipper and cheery. She used sadistic sarcasm to outsmart her peers and would have made a great serial killer.

Be Unique

2.) Embrace Your Unique Side. Gomez understood that play time is important for both children and adults. It’s cool to hold onto your train set or work on your yo-yo tricks even when you’re grown up.

3.) Pursue your own interests. Both Gomez and Morticia used their free time to become more accomplished. You may want to raise roses instead of carnivorous plants.

4.) Study Languages. Morticia was best known for speaking French, but the happy couple could express themselves in many languages. Sometimes they’d converse in Yiddish, Spanish, or Italian. Expand your vocabulary so you’ll have the right word for any occasion.

5.) Keep The Romance Alive. Despite their strange lifestyle, the chemistry between Gomez and Morticia was a big part of the appeal. A loving family provides a strong foundation for happiness and success.

6.) Bond With Your Siblings. They might hate everyone else, but siblings
Wednesday and Pugsley could always count on each other. They kept each other safe even when they were playing with dynamite and spiders.

Love Yourself

7.) Be Confident, No Matter What Your Size. People sometimes worry about being smaller or bigger than average. Lurch the butler was one of the family despite being almost seven feet tall. He also excelled at his job by instantly producing whatever the family needed. Life is so much better when you love yourself.

8.) Real Beauty Comes From Within. Enjoy your life. Cousin Itt was covered with hair and had a squeaky voice, but that didn’t stop him from being a charmer. Real beauty comes from within.

9.) You Are Complete. For a creature who was a disembodied hand, Thing led a remarkably full life. He could walk on his fingers or communicate in Morse code. Remember that when you feel limited.

10.) Stay young at heart. Grandmama and Uncle Fester were two feisty seniors. You may want to take a pass on wresting alligators, but you can still enjoy outdoor sports and time with your friends.

The original television series aired in the 1960s, but was resurrected a few times over the past few decades. My favorite version was the 1990s fam, starring Christina Ricci.

Valuable Lessons From The Addams Family

I’ve learned a few things from the Addams Family, but the most valuable lesson is to be true to yourself. The Addams Family were a wealthy bunch, but they loved their dilapidated Victorian mansion just the way it was. They knew their lifestyle and interests were odd, but that didn’t stop them from pursuing their passions and breaking society’s molds. They minded their own business, and lived their lives wondering why everyone made such a fuss about them. So, shock the world. Be that breath of fresh air. After all, the world needs a little more Morticia and Gomez, don’t you think?

Also, I hear they’re coming out with a new animated Addams Family movie to be released before Halloween 2019. If you’re a fan, or not, be sure to check out the trailer.
