How To Prevent Earring Irritation

Why Do My Ears Hurt When I Wear Earrings?

I went years without wearing earrings, and every once in a while I would put them in and they would irritate my ears so bad that I would take them right out and never wear them again. I wanted to wear cute hoops and diamond studs, but they irritated my ears so bad I couldn’t. Why do my ears hurt when I wear earrings? I was beginning to think I would never be able to wear earrings again. But I found a solution!

I recently got a beautiful pair of Swarovski crystal earrings and even though they are great quality earrings, they still irritated my ears. I had two options, they could sit and sparkle in my jewelry box or I find a way to wear earrings again in comfort. So I started looking for solutions, and I found one that works!

How To Wear Earrings Again

Tip 1. Clean your ears daily with alcohol to help heal and prevent infection.

Tip 2. Dip the tip of your earring (the part that goes in the piercing) in some coconut oil. Coconut oil helps heal your sore ears because it contains natural anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. It also provides a soothing barrier.

Tip 3. Give your ears a day or two break. After wearing earrings for a day, take them out and give your ears a day or two to heal.

Tip 4. Avoid cheap earrings. If you can buy sterling silver or gold plated, hypoallergenic earrings, do it! Avoid cheap metal earrings because they will just sit in your jewelry box since you can’t wear them anyway! Sometimes, especially with cheaper earrings, my ears would get red, hot and itchy. Not exactly the look I’m going for.

Wearing earrings again is possible! But, if your ears are infected, be sure to speak to your doctor to get some medical advice.

I hope this post helps you to be able to enjoy all of your cute hoops and diamonds again!

  1. This was a very helpful post. I’ve never had a problem with earrings but I remember I’d always take them off and forget to put them back in and so the hole would somehow start shrinking quickly and I’d wear heavy earrings to open it up and then coconut oil to help ease the earring in. I didn’t why they were using coconut oil but now I do.
It’s been ages that I’ve taken out my current earrings. I wear them for everything and I, not being a great fan of many earrings, stick to one kind since years- a tiny barely seen dot of white stone. Just a little glint.

    1. I always have coconut oil on hand it’s good for so many things!!
I like diamond studs 🙂 love the sparkle! I’m so glad to be able to wear earrings again!

I am so happy to find this. I will have to try it. I have asked other women if they had this problem with achy, itchy ears and they act like I’m crazy. So glad I am not alone. I use coconut oil on my face daily so this makes it easy. Thanks!

    1. Glad to help! I knew I wasn’t the only one dealing with this! Sensitive ears I guess 🤷‍♀️

Thank you so much, it was really helpful. Also, I am thinking that can we clean our ear pearcing hole because I’ve seen a black dot kinda thing inside my ear pearcing hole ( which must be dirt)
        How can we do that?

      2. Try some rubbing alcohol with a cotton swab twice a day:)

  3. I’m gonna try the coconut oil thing now. Thank you.

Use clear polish, I use it on my earrings and belt buckles to prevent irritation and it works like a charm.
