Essential Oils For Candles

If you’re used to the store-bought ‘aromatherapy’ candles that are so strong, they can fill your entire home with the scent of pumpkin spice in minutes, than you might be surprised when you light up a homemade candle using essential oils. That’s because essential oils for candles aren’t loaded up with artifical ingredients. This is a good thing. You don’t want those chemicals. It can take some getting used to, but the subtle, natural scent is so good for you!

Many store-bought candles use paraffin wax and toxic substances that are even linked to cancer.

When making candles with essential oils, you want to use quality oils and a slow-burning wax. This will ensure your candles last longer and release your scents slowly. Soy wax is great because it’s natural and it holds your oils longer.

Which essential oils you choose for you candles is a personal preference, but potency is important if you want to enjoy the benefits.

My favourite essential oils for candles:

  • Amyris
  • Sweet Orange
  • Bergamot
  • Ylang Ylang
  • Rose
  • Pine
  • Nutmeg

These oils have a strong scent that won’t be completely absorbed by the wax. You can mix your oils together to create different scents.

Tips For Making Candles With Essential Oils

The number one tip is to use more essential oil than you think you need. I’m not talking a whole bottle, but if you want to enjoy the scent you’ll need at least 30 drops of oils to make a small candle. The recommended ratio is usually 2 teaspoons of essential oil for every 4-ounces of melted wax.

This will ensure your candle is potent enough to enjoy the aromatherapy benefits. You don’t want a weak candle.

After you have made your candles, make sure to cover them so the scent doesn’t fade.

Winter Woods Essential Oil Candle

Time: 10 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1 oz soy wax
  • 1 Tbsp solid coconut oil
  • 14 drops lime essential oil
  • 12 drops pine essential oil
  • 4 drops nutmeg essential oil
  • cotton candle wick
  • 2- 3 oz narrow jar or mold

Instructions:

Step 1: In a double boiler, melt the soy wax, beeswax and coconut oil together.

Step 2: Once mixture has just melted, remove from heat. Add essential oils and stir to mix.

Step 3: Place candle wick in centre of jar or mold. Pour in wax while propping wick upright. If necessary lay pencils across the top of the candle to keep the wick centered. Allow to cool.

Step 4: To use, trim the wick and light the candle. Keep away from children.

The candle will have a burn time of 5-7 hours.
