How To Become A Blogger

How To Become A Blogger & Make Money

So you want to be a blogger? It’s an exciting career path or hobby, that has many benefits. I’ve been a writer for over 10 years and a blogger for nearly 3 years and in the post I’ll give you some tips on how to become a blogger.

Should you start a blog?

The biggest step you can take is probably the scariest and that’s actually starting your blog. It’s easy and safe to just play around with the idea of starting a blog and wait until you learn more about it before you actually start, but nothing will help you more than actually taking the leap!

If this is something you want, why not start today? You can create a blog in about an hour, then design your logo and write up a few posts and your entire website can be up and running in an afternoon.

How To Become A Blogger: Stop Waiting!

Stop Waiting Until You Learn More. You’ll Learn More By Doing, Than Anything Else!

Instead of waiting to learn more or until you figure out exactly what or how to do it, my advice (as a seasoned and successful blogger) is to JUST DO IT… NOW!

The learning curve is a bit steep and can be intimidating. Get your site set up and give yourself a few weeks to get the hang of things before you really dive in. It took me a few months even before I really got comfortable blogging.

My biggest, and maybe only, regret when starting this blog is not starting sooner. Sure, it took me a few months to get comfortable with web design and the blogging world, but I wouldn’t have been able to learn that without actually starting anyway. And, I’ve created a successful blog that now has over 100,000 monthly views and brings in $$.

Ready to get started? Let’s do this!

How To Become A Blogger: Step By Step

You can blog about anything and make your site whatever you want it to be, so what should you blog about?

You can start a personal blog, business blog, hobby blog or anything that interests you and/or your audience. But, my best advice would be to take what you’re most passionate about and knowledgeable about and use that as your focus. This way, you’ll never run out of ideas (well not as quickly) and you’ll have plenty of helpful information to share. If you can help your readers in some way, share something with them, they’ll keep coming back.

How To Become A Blogger: Blog Hosting

In order for your blog to be accessible, you’ll need a secured spot on a server. A blog host is a company that provides you with a space on a service to keep your place.

Though there are some free blog hosting packages, I would not recommend them for anything other than a small hobby blog. If you want to be able to grow you blog, make money and make a business from it, you’ll need fast, reliable and amazing blog hosting service. This ensures your readers safety as well, prevents your Website from crashing, provides many advertising opportunities and more space for content.

How To Become A Blogger: Choose A Domain

DomainIf you want to become a blogger, you’ll need a domain name. You’ll want to really think about this before you purchase because you don’t want to switch your domain later on, unless absolutely necessary. Your domain should represent what your blog is about and can even help you Search Engine Optimization because it’ll help Google understand your blog. And since your website gains authority over time, you don’t want to start over with a new domain and start back at 0.

Here’s a great article if you need help with blog name ideas.

How To Become A Blogger: Pick A Blog Theme

Themes– A theme helps you design your blog layout. Most hosting services provide a variety of free themes to choose from, but if you want a more professional theme I suggest checking out Blossom themes. They are what I currently use and love! Blossom themes help you create a beautiful website design.

Design Your Logo

Logo– Your logo should represent what your blog is about and the vibe of your website, but don’t spend too much time on designing the perfect logo. Spend an hour or so creating a logo that works and upload it to your blog. You can always tweak it later on. It’s more important to get your site up and running and focus on creating content rather than just brand design.

Here are some great tips on how to design the perfect logo for your website.

How To Become A Blogger: Create A Home Page

Home page– There are two options you’ll see when setting your homepage- static page or latest posts. You can either set your home page to show a landing page that shows what your website is about or you can set your home page to showcase your latest blog posts.

About page– Your about page should tell a bit about you and your website. Every site should have an about page to help shape your brand. Use your about page to explain what readers can find on your website, why you started your blog and even a little about yourself if you want.

My About Me Page

Your readers may want to know more about you or how to get in touch with you. Be sure to include your social media accounts and email address.

How To Become A Blogger: Start Blogging!

Blog posts– Want to learn how to become a blogger? You’ll need to write some blog posts. You’ll want to start off with a few blog posts to help you build momentum, get a feel for blogging and start the foundation of your website. I suggest starting off with a few blog posts, maybe aim for one in each of your niche topics. For example, if your blog is about cooking you can create several categories within your niche such as: Under 30 minute meals, Comfort Foods, Kids Foods, Desserts, etc.

I started this blog with just one blog post, but looking back I would have liked to have started with a few more. I also recommend publishing once a week if possible to keep your website alive and growing.

Social media accounts– If you want to grow your blog, sharing it across social media can help you attract an audience.

Social Media Marketing Basics

Don’t waste your time trying to be everywhere, all of the time. This will burn you out and is ineffective. Instead, find out which platforms to focus on most.

First- identify your target audience. Who do you picture reading your blog? Who are you writing for?

Then, find out which platforms they hang out on. Are they on Pinterest? Maybe they’re also on Instagram? Pinterest is great for driving traffic and Instagram is great for shaping your brand, but often gets less clicks to your blog unless you have a huge following.

Search Engine Optimization is also VERY IMPORTANT! Everyone is on Google and searches for terms related to your blog. Focus on building your SEO right from the beginning and you’ll connect with your ideal audience without having to be constantly connected to social media.

Connect your blog to Google analytics to track your audience and stats. This is an important tool to help you grow your website. You can see how long your readers are on your website, which pages are most popular and where your audience is located.

Be patient. Perhaps the most valuable piece of advice I could give is if you want to become a blogger and make money is to give it time to grow. It took me o a year before I made any money and two years before I started to make over $1000 a month. It doesn’t happen in one month!! Where did you get that crazy idea?

Once you’ve got the hang of design, publishing and promoting, you can focus on learning affiliate marketing and blog advertising so you can make money. It really helps if you focus on growing your blog first and then making money once it’s established.

Take time to be consistent and focus on creating content that helps and connects with your audience. You can NEVER GO WRONG doing this.
