How To Come Up With Blog Name Ideas

Where I Went Wrong

Your blog name- It’s the first thing people see when they visit your site. It is your first impression. When I started this blog, it was a bit (or a lot) of a mess. Coming up with the best blog name was hard. I went back and fourth between names and ideas!

Want to know how to come up with a blog name?

Here’s how I came up with blog name ideas, where I went wrong, and what I learned from it!

First off, I don’t even like bees. I do like pie! My first draft blog name was My Social B. It didn’t represent me very well, but I needed something quick to get my Instagram and blog pages up and running for a college project. It wasn’t permanent. I’m actually terrified of bees and my logo included a picture of a beehive and my content used playful bee phrases such as ‘Get your business buzzing’. The image and name were catchy, but not ME! I wanted to create a better blog brand and blog name, that reflects me.

Funny story– During an outdoor event I had to cover for a local newspaper, I was interviewing the mayor about the town’s millennium forest when I saw it out of the corner of my eye- a bee 🐝. It was huge and heading straight for me. Maybe it’s my perfume, fabric softener or the fact that they really can smell fear, but I always seem to attract them. Anyway, my anxiety heightened and it was like no one else was even around cuz I dropped my notebook and ran… away… from the mayor I was about to interview. I remember explaining that I had a real fear of bees, stemming from a childhood trauma involving a cottage bunk bed nestled directly below a hive. Needless to say I was stung… a lot! The mayor, whom I had gotten to know over the years as a local journalist, chuckled and we moved the interview inside:) I’m not sure how I kept my job after that. I think my boss was used to my ‘quirkinesses’ at this point. And I mean I did get the story, however boring it ended up being.

How To Come Up With A Blog Name

So back to the pie and how I created the blog name Steph’s Social Pie. Lucky for you, it involves another (less humiliating) story, as a child I didn’t like birthday cake so my mom would make me birthday pie and put candles in and everything:) My fave back then was blueberry I think, and it’s definitely cherry now:) Pie makes sense to me and we go way back! Fun marketing ideas spin off the term easily as well- serving up hot and fresh content, and grab your slice of the social pie, or delicious content ideas here, etc. I feel I can really work with this:) you know when you have an idea and it just fits!

Update: I’ve since re-branded and taken out the pie and just kept it simple – Steph Social:)

Blog Name Ideas

Start with your blog story. Why did you start your blog? What’s the purpose? And who is it for? The name should be a reflection of this!

Be sure to check out this post for all the blogging tools you need to start your blog! And read my Keysearch review to learn more about how to find keywords to improve your search engine results!

Narrow down your niche. Popular niche categories include:

  • Crafting and DIY
  • Home decor or interiors
  • Family and parenting

  • Beauty
  • Lifestyle
  • Travel
  • Food
  • Fitness

Check out your competition. No shame in getting a little inspo from fellow bloggers! It doesn’t mean you’re copying. You’re simply pulling inspiration from other bloggers!

Make it a little personal. This might not work for business blogs, but creating a name that shows the person behind it, is a great way to connect with your audience!

Use a thesaurus! This will allow you to easily see so many new words and combos you might not have thought about! A quick search of the word very and I’ve got more choices: absolutely or remarkably! Or the word advice- try two cents worth or tips!

In case you’re stuck, you can try brainstorming blog names using an interactive generator, such as this one by Satori Studio.

Keep it short and sweet. Try using abbreviations if you can or if the full phrase is already taken! Just stay away from hyphens because that’s just bad for SEO!

Get feedback! Ask your friends, family and fellow bloggers for their input!

Use your name! I’ve used mine and instead of my given last name, I’ve changed it to Social, putting a fun spin on my niche- social media marketing!

Should Blog Names Be SEO-Friendly?

This has been debated for a long time. Some bloggers say yes, and marketers often say yes. Even a reputable SEO agency would say yes to this question, too. But of course, you’ll also find other professionals giving a no. So, what’s actually the answer? Well, the thing is, there is no definitive answer.

Yup, you read that right, but with that said, it’s important to consider the purpose and audience of your blog. But with that said, an SEO-friendly blog name can certainly offer advantages in terms of search engine visibility and ranking potential.

Plus, this may be better when it comes to trying to convey the topic or niche of your blog to both search engines and readers, thus, improving the likelihood of attracting relevant traffic. But be sure that SEO-friendliness doesn’t come at the expensive of creativity or overall brand ideneitity. There is a balance, and you definitely need to strike this balance.

Wondering how to come up with a blog name? Choosing a name is a big decision, but don’t be afraid to change it if you want to in the future! Re-branding is inevitable as you grow. Your blog name should be a reflection of you and your blog! It should also connect with your audience and give them a bit of an idea of what you blog about!

I love that you got birthday pies instead of cakes, I’m not a big fan of birthday cakes either so I would have definitely preferred a pie! Love the new name and tagline 🙂
